Bees are the New Black

Found this amazing video designed to bring awareness to the disappearing honey bees and then had to post the Blind Melon video too... because I listened to it on repeat for about 3 months of my life.

An actual conversation over heard. Skinny Jeans heard it too:

Woman: "You know, you have a honey bee hole out front."
Totally uninterested store owner: "Really."
Woman: "Yes! You should make them a little roof or something."
Totally uninterested store owner: "uh huh. A roof."
Woman: "You could just cut a little piece of tin or something to keep them dry...."
said woman goes on for at least 20 minutes about how much she loves bees, has bees, saves bees, etc. Store owner finally just walks away from her mid sentence....

Seeing Things

New Year's, Overratedness, and Sunglasses

This year I have officially move New Year's into my over rated category. I also moved Starbucks, meditation, and the the E Channel over there.
Honestly? I go out all the time. I am now expected to go out and wait in lines and pay covers at places I never pay covers at. I'm having a little trouble amping myself up for this....
I have also been accused of having a "bad attitude" about it. ummmm have we met?
To show my positive side though, I believe 2009 will bring me these sunglasses and Theo from The Dreamers. Because they are amazing.

Everything In Excess

While I was home for the holidays, my dad took some time to have a little talk with me about my "excessive lifestyle". Since I genuinely enjoy these talks if only to defend my position, I asked him to elaborate. Don't get me wrong, my dad is completely awesome. He carries pictures of his miniature donkeys around with him... super cute. BUT, my dad doesn't see the value in bottle service.
So the talk continued about my high dinner tabs, drinking bouts, yelling frequency, pretty much everything I like about my life but it has really stuck with me since then. Do I have an excessive lifestyle? Is there a difference between "excessive" and just plain fun?
Also, there my be a slight problem here because I took a short inventory of all the things I really like and 95% would fall into that "excessive" category.

On top of that, I like other people who like excess of all kinds. The kind of person that you say hello to and end up talking to for 2 hours on some kind of crazy philosophical rant. the kind of person who quits their job to open a lobster farm in Maine.

If I Had A Bar It Would Be A Cereal Bar

ok, so I've had a whole rash of ideas lately, some of which didn't make it off the ground. I do want to revisit the "Cereal Bar" idea that I had though after I saw this post showcasing cereal box covers. It's my theory that cereal is one of the single most fun foods around and therefore more offices should stock and supply their employees with a cereal bar. It's not very expensive and the sheer variety of cereal could jumpstart more workplace creativity.
My Top 5 cereals:
1) Cinnamon Toast Crunch
2) Lucky Charms
3) Fruity Pebbles
4) Oh's
5) Berry Berry Kix

Did you know there was a cereal called Corn Crackos? Amazing.

Places I've Never Been

An Actual Conversation

Overheard today:

Girl 1: He was seriously one of the finest specimen of men I've ever seen.
Girl 2: Yeah, he was beautiful
Girl 1: He did a lot of drugs though.... and he was crazy. He's probably dead.
Girl 2: You think? That would be weird... I've never slept with someone who's dead before.

Wanna Come Over Sometime?

I'm not going to write a flowery Christmas post.  For one, nothing about Christmas at my house is flowery, peaceful, quiet, relaxing, or anything that it's supposed to be. Here's a short list of things that happened at my house this year:

*  My mom, who apparently has developed serious ADD herds my whole family into our living room / kitchen to watch a movie and then proceeds to run both the vacuum cleaner and garbage disposal during it.
*  Ali and I found our old prom dresses and made everyone watch while we squeezed back into them and paraded around the house.
*  Hilary's cat eats most of the ribbons from the presents while we are asleep and then vomits them up on the bathroom floor.
* No less than 2 vehicles won't start on Christmas morning due to the fact that it's perpetually negative 10 degrees.  None of this stops my mom from suggesting that we "go outside and do something" every half hour.
* When we do "go outside and do something" it involved Carhartt camouflage snowmobiling suits and a Wakeboard.  Use your imagination.

I'm Sort of Obsessed With The Shining This Winter

Since they close everything so that it can snow another 12 inches every week, I have naturally been talking about The Shining a lot.  It's great that I get to "work from home" and everything but it's not like I can go anywhere so I pretty much feel trapped like the Torrences.  But without the big-wheel and the creepy twins.
Came across this re-structured Shining trailer and had to post it.  I find it's better to just give in to the craving.

Brazil

photos by Senal Zorlu
These photos are beautiful and the site is worth the trip although most of them are not taken in Brazil, they remind me of Brazil. If you have not seen these Brazil centered films, go out and rent them and watch them this week. Promise me.

City of God - the cinematography in this film will blow you away.
Lower City
Manda Bala - more documentary-ish but so good.

Vulnerable

fffound
This is honestly a topic that I hate talking about, writing about, thinking about. I'd so rather go the "tough girl" route or the "vodka drinking" route. Here's the thing: as some of you know I'm thinking of opening this gallery I'm calling "Terrible Idea" for the moment. It's scaring the crap out of me. I closed a failed business a little over a year ago and now I apparently haven't had enough of this mess and drama.
I have to do things like ummmm ask for help. I don't even ask for directions in the car. Ever. On top of this, I am continually meeting people that point out this tough girl thing and how it's "cute". Oskar and Skinny Jeans, this is you.
In other news... I'm thinking of getting these roller skates.

Pure Sugar

Ok, I wasn't going to go on and on about these but I had the most amazing thing I have eaten since I moved to Madison. Marigold's made doughnut muffins this weekend. They were the highlight of my week, and possibly my life. They are the most wonderful slice of heaven.
If you are nearby.... do yourself a favor and go in there. If not - find them in your own city. You won't be sorry.

Dawn of The Dinner Party

I used to be the kind of person that would eat out at least 4 times a week but since fall everyone seems to be getting into the dinner party thing. I have literally been to no less than 6 in the last month and a half. What I can't decide is, do I like them because the economy is bad so everyone is staying in? Or is it because I'm finally old and this is what old people do?
For anyone out there who can't cook and has a small apartment, you can do this. Trust me, if I can go out and buy a lasagna and and everything else and pretend I made it, so can you. I even found a blog that's all about dinner parties that was pretty helpful.
I miss the days of just picking a restaurant but I have been to some pretty great dinner parties that have served everything from spaghetti and meatballs to formal 3 course dinners. I'm thinking of having another one soon... can you believe this?

Hint Hint

For anyone out there that's sick for real from an airport or for fake from vodka Red bulls, a new drink for what ails you. From Honeydrop. I guess it doesn't have any sugar in it, which is usually a turnoff for me but if it makes you feel better.....

You Would Think By Now We Wouldn't Still See Horrible Driving Scenes.

I've been alternating my movie choices lately between French love stories and horror movies and it's beginning to feel a little... unhealthy.
What can it possibly mean? That I want to make out with a zombie? That I like a lot of blood, but oh yeah, the girls should dress really great? That I like the highbrow-ness of a foreign film but can also enjoy a good chainsaw slaying?
So tonight I watched A Man And A Woman while I read reports and tried to set up a desk in my house - not good. Good clothes but overall not my favorite. They spend an abnormal amount of time driving in the car and it's completely green screened which drives me crazy. All I can think about in a movie with fake driving scenes is: There is no WAY they wouldn't crash right now.
Could have used a zombie.

This morning at my office:
"Hey... who is King Wenceslaus?"
"Like from the song?"
"Yeah. Good King Wenceslaus or whatever"
"I don't know. Some Bible guy."

The Vapous's also got me a Christmas tree. It's no Christmas Mannequin but it's adorable and has these little ornaments that go with it. I just love it!

Uniform

The Craigslist Post That Might Change Everything.

Daniel Everett
It was a listing for an artist's studio over the summer. I called the guy about it but he told me he had a broken ankle so he wouldn't be able to show me the space for a while and then promptly dropped off the planet.
Fast forward to this week. I'm wading through studio listings and thinking about opening an art gallery. Really. Yes, here. I'm not 100% sold yet but I'm getting closer.
And honestly? I know it's a pretty bad idea. I've thought of reasons 1-5000 why it's not a good idea. I just happen to love terrible ideas.

Missing

Le Love

I just found Le Love and it's exactly what I needed since I am missing a lot of people today. People that are far away in their studio inspiring me to make something. People that I can't find after looking for months. People moving across the country to a new house in St. Louis. People in town that I haven't seen in a week and people in town I haven't seen in 3 days.
Maybe even people I haven't met yet.

Is This A Real Hobby?

My friend Tom C. goes to the shooting range. For fun. Which I didn't even know you could do. Is it just me, or is the shooting range so.... not bowling? Is it a real hobby? Is it kind of like playing a video game?
I thought it was practice for hunting....
Now, he's recruited the Vapous's to go along with him so I have to decide how I feel about this whole thing.

Investment Art

Miles Aldridge

I have found a few pieces of art that I have wanted to buy lately and am trying to figure out a good justification when I still have boring things to pay for like my car and heat. A friend told me "it's a good investment", which I hate hearing. I know it's a good investment... but everything good I have ever purchased was simply "because I want it".
